The CDC estimates that 6.1 million children have been diagnosed with ADHD in the United States as of 2016. ADHD is one of the most pervasive mental disorders affecting children and adults, yet there are still many misconceptions and stigmas surrounding the condition. Having your child professionally evaluated and diagnosed can make it easier to navigate life with ADHD and allow you and your child to get the proper support.

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. This condition can cause a wide range of symptoms including fidgeting, disruptiveness, irritability, trouble focusing, forgetfulness, anger, boredom, anxiety, and depression. ADHD can make it hard for a child to function at home, succeed in school, and participate in social situations.

Common Misconceptions About ADHD

Although ADHD is a very real condition backed by extensive research, there are many people who doubt the validity of this disorder. ADHD children are often labeled as “lazy” or “bad” children who just need to buckle down or try harder. ADHD can have a serious impact on a child’s success and mental health if it is not properly diagnosed and treated. ADHD children can’t just focus, sit still, or remember simply because they are told to do so. Their brains work differently, and they must be properly accommodated.

Atracare Offers ADHD Consultations and Treatment

At Atracare, we can evaluate your child and determine if an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate for their symptoms. Your child’s pediatrician will use the criteria listed in the DSM-V to make an accurate assessment of their symptoms. Indicators of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity will be used to evaluate your child’s symptoms and determine if they have ADHD.

If your child is found to have ADHD, they will be able to move forward with treatment. Behavioral therapy, medications, and resources for parents can be used to help a child manage life with ADHD.

You made a good point that early diagnosis is essential when it comes to ADHD treatment services. I have a neighbor who is a bit worried about her son who is showing some signs of it lately. Maybe it would be best for him to get tested very soon.
